WA State Government does backflip on Tiny living legislation
Aug 26, 2024🚨BREAKING NEWS 🚨
Exciting news coming out of WA.
Traditionally one of the most restrictive states where camping is concerned, WA has just announced a statewide amendment to camping laws. Where previously the length of time you could stay in a caravan or Tiny House was a max of 3 months, you can now be approved for full time occupancy for a two year period, which is able to be renewed!
The fine print:
- new statewide policy is effective from September 1
- you may apply to have ONE Tiny House or caravan on a property, although you can also seek special permission for two or more
- permission must be sought by the individual council relevant to the property
- the Local Government Minister can issue approvals in certain circumstances, such as in cases where the council in question fails to provide a response within the requisite timeframe of 63 days
- councils credited as instrumental in pushing for this change were Margaret River, Manjimup and Denmark
- approval for a two year term is possible, with the ability for this to be renewed.
Other WA councils which already have policies for the approval of Tiny House living include Capel, Ravensthorpe and Esperance.
This is a complete game-changer for the fledgling West Australian Tiny House industry, and will see many more people adequately housed inside a broken system. Well done to all who contributed to this legislative 180. We’re excited to see what impact this has on the WA Tiny scene.
