Where did the Tiny House movement start?
Aug 29, 2024Tiny Houses originally started being built in Australia during the 2010’s as a grassroots movement.
It was primarily a response to capitalism and the culture of over-consumption.
For better or worse, Australians have been sold the idea that a larger home equates to greater levels of success in life.
As a result, a huge proportion of Aussies find themselves living in homes they simply can’t afford.
The Tiny House movement represents a “back to basics” approach to a simpler life. A life that’s filled with experiences, stillness, and community, rather than the capitalist cycle of work harder/buy more/create higher overheads and the need to work more.
As more builders and businesses have turned their backs on the traditional construction sector in favour of working with Tiny Houses, this “movement” has expanded to the point that it’s become an entirely new industry.
And we’re not talking small change here.
The Australian Tiny House industry currently consists of more than 300 building businesses.
Plus there are hundreds of other associated services- from finance and insurance to towing, expos, land sharing and myriad off-grid products.
By our estimate, there over 2,000 households currently being supported by this industry!!
It’s time legislators had a true sense of the scope of this industry, and its potential for a multitude of versatile, economical housing applications.
WE NEED YOUR HELP TO DO THIS.
One of our key drivers is to collect data so we can demonstrate the true extent of the industry.
We know all the above to be true- but we need hard evidence in order to create real change.
